The 24-track set, produced by Jason Samel, features a mix of original recordings, previously released tracks and live versions of older songs – all of which share the theme of environmental awareness. Standout tracks include a new song from Meshell Ndegeocello ("Never Still Water"), Raitt's 1994 track "Hell to Pay" and an unreleased live version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" from the late Pete Seeger. Other featured artists include Marco Benevento and Dave Dreiwitz, Natalie Merchant and the Felice Brothers, Rusted Root, Anti Flag and Steve Earle.

Music has long been a medium used to promote social change, and when a group of well-respected artists band together for a cause, it’s hard not to take notice. One of the latest examples of this kind of activism is Buy This Fracking Album, an effort from artists like John Butler Trio and Bonnie Raitt to raise awareness of the harm of hydro-fracking, a commonly-used means of extracting natural gases from the earth.

“My hope is that this album will open the ears of its listeners and help forge a path toward real democracy,” says album producer Jason Samel. “One where environment and its citizens’ well being come before profit.”

‘Greatest folk concert’ on Long Island to aid center

Samel said he was decided to combined Amram’s 84th birthday celebration with a tribute for Pete Seeger because of the close relationship of the two men.

“David Amram was very close friends with Pete Seeger, which is the reason we wanted to tie this into his birthday concert,” Samel said.  “David has a long history in folk music, classical, jazz, blues, as well as music of the American Indians.... He is in fact one of the most respected folk musicians in the country, as well as in so many other genres of music.  Every artist on the bill has played with David and Pete, as it was a requirement for an artist to be able to play in this concert.  Also, much of Amrams music will be played at the concert, as it is a tribute to both him, and Pete.”

Occupy This Album: Music Legends Make Record to Support Occupy Wall Street

David Their, Forbes Magazine

“Occupy This Album” may now be getting attention for its impressive lineup of celebrities and protest legends, but the idea for the album started with an unknown performer. Producer Jason Samel had been walking around Zucotti park in the early days of the protest when he was blown away by a singer-songwriter playing on some steps with a guitar and a harmonica. The singer was Matt Pless, a former punk rocker fromBaltimore who took the bus up to Wall Street. A small crowd had gathered around him.
